Q: Do you remember learning to read?

A: I learned to read on the newspaper, sounding things out myself when I was about four. I always loved newspapers. At home we got the Miami Herald in the morning and the Fort Lauderdale News in the afternoon. The afternoon paper would have some baseball scores that the morning paper wouldn’t have gotten in yet. I would read the morning paper to my dad at the breakfast table — maybe one story before he went off to work — and in the evening I would read to him again. My mom was an English teacher and was a terrific help to me too. Both my parents were big readers. So, it wasn’t as if I was in a cave, trying to do it on my own.
